This project exceeded all our expectations and DPEAP would be happy to work with any SEN school wishing to participate in such a project. Please contact us if you would like more details.

Aim
To increase the knowledge and understanding of Year 11 pupils regarding substance misuse with particular attention to alcohol, tobacco and solvents to enable the Year 11's to develop and deliver two lessons for the Year 7's.

Objectives
To prepare and produce a teaching resource pack for Year 11
To prepare and deliver drug education workshops for Year 11
To explore with Year 11s what information they consider relevant to Year 7 pupils.
To explore and develop two lesson plans.

The vast majority of the work is verbal and visual to help cater for the academic requirements of the young people. DPEAP workers along with teaching staff will be present with the young people at all times to encourage and enable them to actively complete the project. When working in small groups two Year 11 pupils will be working alongside groups of no more than four Year 7s.

The project raises self-esteem as well as developing the following skills for the Year 11s:
Communication
Planning skills
Presentation skills
Time management
Research skills

Year 7 pupils will receive drugs education using a different approach from the one they are used to.
