Drugs education can not be confined to the school environment.
Although it is vital that schools take an active lead in addressing
the issue they cannot do all the work on their own. Youth groups,
both statutory and voluntary also have a vital role to play in
keeping young people safe and influencing their life
choices.
None of us would want to take our job home and continue
to work on it in our social gatherings and young people are no
exception. It is therefore important that we adapt the way drugs
education is delivered to groups outside the school environment to
enable young people to continue to explore the issues. DPEAP
continue to develop alternative ways of discussing and provoking
debate in these situations enabling young people to challenge their
own attitudes and beliefs. Specialist DPEAP staff will work
alongside any statutory or voluntary young people's agency around
the issue of substance misuse. DPEAP staff will also offer staff
training to these organisations to ensure that they have accurate
and up to date information to pass on and clear policies to work
from.
